Printworks wasn’t always an entertainment complex – it’s a building with great history! This November marks Printworks’ 23rd Birthday as well as the building’s 150th birthday!
Printworks as we now know it was originally erected as Withy Grove Printing House back in 1873. That makes this year it’s 150th Birthday! It ran successfully as a newspaper printers for over 100 years, producing publications such as the Manchester Evening Chronicle and the Daily Mirror, until it was closed in 1985.

The building opened it’s doors again in 2000 following a huge redevelopment. On the 9th November we can celebrate Printworks’ 23rd Birthday! On this day back in 2000, Alex Ferguson and Lionel Ritchie were the guest celebrities opening the transformed centre to the public. Since then, A-listers have continued to pass through the doors. From all the local Corrie stars to Kylie Minogue, David Beckham and Will Smith!
Printworks continues to be a hot spot in Manchester, and is now home to Vue Cinemas with one of Europe’s largest IMAX screens, Hard Rock Café and many of your favourite restaurants, bars, clubs, health club and entertainment destinations. This year, World Mental Health Day falls on Tuesday 10th October. It’s all about raising awareness of mental health and driving positive change for everyone. It’s also a chance to talk about our mental health and what we can do to help look after it.
Mental health issues can affect anyone and everyone, but research shows that talking about it is good for your mental health. The Mental Health Foundation are encouraging you to hold a Tea & Talk event. It’s is a great way to come together with friends, family or colleagues to raise money and awareness for the cause. Head to their website to find out more and start planning your event with a free downloadable pack and resources.
We’ve gathered a few simple tips to help improve your mood and wellbeing, all in an effort to support positive mental health…

As our bodies and minds are connected, moving our bodies with exercise of any sort is a great way to improve our mental health as well as our physical health. Exercise releases those lovely ‘feel good’ hormones that can reduce feelings of stress, along with improving sleep, boosting your self-esteem and helping you concentrate too. The best kind of exercise is simply the stuff you enjoy!
Nuffield Health have a huge range of exercise classes, from calming yoga to fun & fast Zumba, that is sure to get those mood-boosting hormones flowing! Swimming is also a great exercise whether you want to do fast-paced lengths, a spot of aqua aerobics, or just float around! Then you can add some self care in the form of a sauna visit.
There’s many ways our mental health can be affected by our everyday life, whether it’s a stressful job, money worries or something else that has been niggling away. But it’s important to still find your joy and a little escapism with the latest blockbuster release can give you that hit of dopamine you’ve been chasing!
Vue cinema offers escapes into whichever world you like, from sci-fi to romance, action to comedy, and everything in between. They can take you to the theatre, stadium or arena with their big screen events, all from the comfort of a luxury recliner chair. Whether it’s a trip down memory lane or a visit to somewhere far beyond your own imagination, films can transport us from the everyday to anywhere you’d like!

Similar to exercise, (although many of us wouldn’t class it as that), playing fun activities with friends can have just as good an effect on your mental health. Not only are you moving your bodies to get the good hormones flowing, but you’re surrounded by your chosen people that help you to enjoy yourself. It’s also the perfect opportunity to get talking about mental health with the people you love and trust.
Whatever your friend group is into, there’s always a mood-boosting activity that can make you laugh and smile. Whether is hitting the Arcade games at Tenpin, traversing the tropical course at Treetop Golf or letting off some steam with the axe-throwing at Boom Battle Bar. You don’t have to be perfect or even any good, as long as you have the best company with you. And if you just want to be a big kid again, why not jump into that big ball pit at Bingo Balls!
Music can have a profound impact on our mental health. It can help us to release emotions, bring back memories, appreciate the written word and entice us to start dancing. They say the secret to life is to dance like no-one’s watching – just feel the beat and let your body do the talking! All that physical movement and joy brought about by your favourite tune can be a great way to lift your spirits.
Everyone has their own favourite style of music that gives them that get-up-and-dance feeling. Whether it’s club classics at Cargo, reggaeton vibes at Floripa, or Bavarian twists on pop hits at Bierkeller, there’s something for everyone to enjoy! It’s the perfect way to shake off any negativity and let the music wash over you.

Diet can have a huge impact on your mental health and making sure you are getting all those essential nutrients can help maintain your body along with your mind. Apparently, you are what you eat, but really, it’s all about the balance. Fresh food with the odd treat here and there is a great way to keep your body full of the good stuff and, in turn, help towards a healthy mentality. Experiencing a wide range of fruits and veg, and enjoying your favourites meals too can make a healthy diet not feel like such a dirty word.
There’s all kinds of cuisine to choose from to excite your pallet, from spicy fajitas at Chiquito to warming ramens at Wagamama to vegan varieties at Frankie & Benny’s. Even that cheeky Nando’s isn’t so bad when you look at their selection of colourful sides! Whether it’s just a case of being hangry, or a lifesytle change for the better, diet is a great place to start.

Seeing will truly be believing!

“Printworks has shown resilience through the pandemic and refurbishing this iconic venue remains part of our vision. The leisure sector continues to transition as visitors seek the ultimate experience with technology redefining both expectations and possibilities. Visitors will soon benefit from just that with a fully immersive and interactive environment on a scale not previously seen in the UK, making it an ideal location for existing and future venues.”
Printworks is home to hundreds of staff members from waiters to managers, cleaners to security guards, with everyone helping to make your visit one to remember. So we think it’s about time to give something back to those that deserve some recognition for their hard work! Each month, we’ll be giving at least one Printworks staff member a bundle of goodies to show how much we appreciate all that they do. Whether it’s outstanding customer service or always bringing the positive vibes, our venues can nominate a fellow team mate for any reason why they think they deserve the title of Printworks Hero. We’ll even be giving out extra awards (and goodies) for special months throughout the year…
We celebrated our female Printworks staff throughout the month of March as part of International Womens Day! From those that were girl-bossing it, to those simply making every day special, there was a whole bundle of goodies given out to these Printworks Heroines.
We support all our staff members that are part of the LGTBQ+ community and are proud to offer a safe work environment to everyone at Printworks. We celebrated all the hard work that our heroes do to make this community feel welcome, both members and allies, this June!
We’re celebrating our male Printworks staff throughout the month of November as part of International Mens Day! From those that manage the most throughout the month, to those that manage a smile everyday, there’s a bundle of goodies on it’s way to the Hero Men of Printworks!
That’s right, you can have your say too! Whether you’re one of the regulars and they make you feel like one of the family, or you’re expectations have been smashed with one staff member in particular making a great impression. If you want to nominate a member of staff for excellent customer service, just let the manager know why you think they deserve the Printworks Hero Award this month!
You’ll definitely want to watch this one on the biggest screen possible! The highly-anticipated film, Oppenheimer, is set to hit the screens on Friday 21st July and with Europe’s second-largest IMAX screen, there’s only one cinema that’s worth booking tickets for this biographical thriller! Printworks’ Vue Cinema is one of just 3 sites in the UK, and the only place outside of London, where you can watch Oppenheimer in 70mm IMAX, to experience every second the way it’s meant to be seen!
Oppenheimer is based on the Pulitzer Prize-winning book “American Prometheus: The Triumph and Tragedy of J. Robert Oppenheimer” by Kai Bird and Martin J. Sherwin. The film was written and directed by Christopher Nolan and produced by Emma Thomas, Atlas Entertainment’s Charles Roven and Nolan. It stars Cillian Murphy as J. Robert Oppenheimer, the theoretical physicist who helped develop the first nuclear weapons, often credited as the “father of the atomic bomb”. As on his previous works, Nolan utilised extensive practical effects and minimal computer-generated imagery for Oppenheimer.
Cinematographer Hoyte van Hoytema shot the film in a combination of IMAX 70mm and 70mm large-format film including, for the first time, sections in IMAX black & white analog photography. Only in IMAX theatres will sequences shot with IMAX film cameras expand vertically to fill the entire screen. With the 70mm film reel, these scenes will expand images up to a 1.43:1 aspect ratio, delivering a distinctive and unique way to experience the film – the way director Christopher Nolan intended.

With the running time of a whopping 3 hours, you’ll want to make sure you’ve satisfied all your needs before sitting down to watch Oppenheimer! So book yourselves in for a pre-movie meal with the added bonus of a cheeky little discount…
With your cinema ticket in hand (or on your phone), you can enjoy some real good comfort food at Frankie & Benny’s and get a movie-massive 30% off. You can really set the mood at Frankie’s too with all the memorabilia surrounding you – perfect for those that are looking for an authentic immersive evening!
How about heating things up and heading over to Chiquito for a flavour explosion! From sizzling fajitas to messy burritos, you can grab a meal that packs a punch, whilst enjoying a cool 33% discount with your cinema ticket.
Once you’ve filled up and are almost ready to burst, it’s time to hit the cinema! Grab some snacks & drinks to keep you going, and don’t forget a final trip to the toilet before you settle in for an intense epic movie!
Whether you’re a die hard fan or just here for the comradery, there something for everyone to cheer on this summer! We’ll be showing a huge selection of fixtures across our 4 main sports bars, along with a few other venues, all on the big screens. From tennis tournaments to football finals, there’s first times in history and returning favourites too!
We’ve got a handy Sports Calendar to help you plan your ultimate sporting event, with info on dates, times, & venues. Here’s a quick round-up for June and July to get you started…
Tennis 🎾
The French Open started in May and continues through the start of June. This tennis tournament takes place in Roland Garros, Paris with the tournament and venue named after the French aviator. It’s the premier clay court championship in the world and the only Grand Slam tournament currently held on this surface, as opposed to grass. It is the second of the four annual Grand Slam tournaments, occurring after the Australian Open and before Wimbledon and the US Open. The French Open is widely regarded as the most physically demanding tennis tournament in the world!
Racing 🏁
The Grand Prix is back and we are showing every qualifier and race! We’ve already seen some amazing races take place over April and May. Coming up in June you can look forward to the Spanish Grand Prix, taking place over 66 laps of the 4.675km Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya, Spain. This year’s Canadian Grand Prix takes place over 70 laps of the 4.361km Circuit Gilles-Villeneuve in Montreal. Heading into July, it’s the Austrian Grand Prix taking place over 71 laps of the 4.318km Red Bull Ring in Spielberg. Then we welcome one of the oldest and most prestigious races in Formula 1 history: the British Grand Prix! Taking place over 52 laps of the 5.891km Silverstone Circuit in Northamptonshire.
Football ⚽
We’re wrapping up the football with plenty of epic final matches! It’s a Manchester Derby for this year’s FA Cup final, for the first time in football history! Both halves of Manchester will return to Wembley Stadium on 3 June for a 3pm kick-off. With 2 rival teams playing in the final we want to welcome all fans, but we know how thing can get a little heated! So we’ve decided to make it easier for everyone and provide separate United and City fan zones so make sure you check where your team’s zone is when you book.
It’s another big match for Manchester City, hoping to win the final of the UEFA Champions League against Inter Milan on June 10th, kicking off at 8pm. Victory for City would make them the 23rd club to win the European Cup. The Cityzens have come close on several occasions in recent years but have never gone the distance, reaching four semi-finals and one final. Three-time winners Inter Milan last lifted the trophy in 2010, when José Mourinho’s team ended a 45-year wait for Europe’s top prize by beating Bayern in Madrid.
Fiorentina and West Ham United meet at the Eden Arena in Prague to contest the second UEFA Europa Conference League final on June 7th at 8pm. Both clubs have European trophies on their list of achievements, each having won the European Cup Winners’ Cup in the 1960’s. Seventh in the 2021/22 Premier League, West Ham therefore ensured a second successive European campaign after going all the way to the semi-finals of last season’s UEFA Europa League. Fiorentina are the highest scorers in the 2022/23 UEFA Europa Conference League, group stage to final, their tally of 36 goals nine more than West Ham’s and also a new competition record, surpassing last season’s high of 28 managed by both finalists, Roma and Feyenoord.
We also see the start to the qualifying matches for the UEFA Euro 2024, with 23 finals berths to be filled via the European Qualifiers which run from March to November 2023, and via play-offs scheduled for March 2024. Three-time winners Germany will stage the UEFA European Championship with the final tournament scheduled to take place from 14 June to 14 July 2024. Catch Malta against England and Wales against Armenia on June 16th.
Boxing 🥊
One of Britain’s best young boxing prospects Adam Azim will face Ukrainian Aram Faniian at London’s historic York Hall to fight for the Super Lightweight Boxing Championship. The talented 21-year-old will make a sizeable step-up in class against the accomplished Ukrainian, who has 22 victories with just one defeat ahead of their super-lightweight showdown taking place on June 10th at 10pm.
Cricket 🏏
It wouldn’t be summer without a spot of cricket! England are to play at home in the five-match Test series against Australia, hoping to regain the Ashes after their defeat down under. The men’s Ashes will be contested between June 16 to July 31, with Edgbaston, Lord’s, Headingley, Old Trafford and The Oval set to host the Tests. England also announced the schedule of the multi-format women’s Ashes series, including the first-ever five-day Test match for the England women’s team on home soil!
Horse Racing 🏇
From 20th – 24th June, you can indulge in world-class horse racing with The Royal Ascot, held at Ascot Racecourse in Berkshire. Steeping in history, it’s the perfect excuse to get dressed up and cheer on the winning steed. The third day of Royal Ascot, Thursday 22nd June, is known as Ladies Day and is a feast for the eyes with high fashion and millinery masterpieces!

They even have a great introductory offer if you happen to be heading over for the FA Cup final – 100 free bottles of Heineken to giveaway! It is a Manchester derby after all. Just sign up to be in with a chance to grab a free bev, but don’t forget to check you’re in the right fan zone!

PRIDE
A multi-award-nominated true story with an all-star cast. It’s about a group of gay and lesbian activists who raise money to help families affected by the British miner’s strike in 1984. Starring Bill Nighy, Imelda Staunton, and Dominic West. If you’re not going to watch a film called Pride during Pride month, when else are you going to watch it?
MOONLIGHT
The Best Picture winner at the 2017 Oscars and the film that changed the game for under-represented LGBTQIA+ stories. This coming-of-age drama takes us through the three defining chapters of a young black man’s life in Miami – and it hits so, so hard. With poignant storytelling, next-level performances and visuals to make you weep – how could anyone watch this just once?
THE BIRDCAGE
Robin Williams and Nathan Lane deliver iconic comedy gold in this 1996 classic. They play a married gay couple who pretend to be straight so their son can introduce them to his financee’s right-wing parents. As you’d expect, chaos ensues! This multi-award-winning romance should be a Pride month staple. Forbidden love tales don’t get much classier and stylish than this. It may be set at Christmas, but who cares? We’d watch it all year round.
